Jaylen now stars on the hit Netflix show Free Rein, she was also a heavily recurred on the Emmy winning Showtime show Shameless. At just 21 years old, Jaylen has proved how versatile she is. Jaylen’s story is one of purpose, persistence, and intent. We were able to catch up with her while she was in the UK filming episodes for Free Rein. Jaylen talks about what it was like starting out and advice for aspiring artists. We get to know the Jaylen Barron that we don’t see onscreen.
You began your career modeling, was the plan always to move on to acting? How was the transition from modeling to acting?
As far as I can remember. My mom says when I was three, I watched Barney and Blues Clues and I told her I wanted to do that inside the TV! My first job was modeling for JUSTICE, a girls clothing brand. The transition wasn’t too hard since I used modeling as a step to get my foot in the door.
Do you remember your first audition or day on a set? How was that experience?
My first audition was extremely nerve wracking! It was for a BRATZ doll commercial. I remember all the girls at the casting were all made up and I was just in jeans and a t-shirt! I must've done well because I got a call back, I didn't book it though.
You gained recognition and success on Disney Channel, then moved on and did Shameless which is a ShowTime show for a more mature audience. How was the transition from Disney to a show like shameless?
My very first role was on Disney’s Shake It Up. I couldn’t believe I was even on a real set, everything was so glamorous to me at the time. I loved that I had a part in this big show even though it was for like 2 seconds! Transitioning out of Disney was easy. I got the privilege to play Dominique on Shameless. She was a good girl to start! Her and Carl had a great relationship and she was changing Carl for the better. She had a change of heart towards the end and she got around a bit- It was great working on that set everybody was wonderful and welcoming. I learned a lot from their style of working and I’m so grateful because I can learn lines on a drop of a dime now. It was the best job.
You’re currently starring in the hit Netflix show Free Rein where you play a teenager from LA that moves to the UK. Was there a culture shock in real life?
It’s been a bittersweet experience since I’m away from my home, family and friends while filming in the U.K., and the weather sometimes makes it hard. Filming outside of the United States has allowed me to explore past my comfort zone. However, I’ve made some incredible lifelong friends. Living in a different country and experiencing different cultures for a good part of the year makes it an incredible opportunity. I’m grateful for that
What was different from acting in America to being on a British TV show?
There wasn’t much of a difference to be honest. It was great to get the opportunity to film in Wales and meet so many new people.
Tell us a bit about the show and what viewers can expect.
Free Rein is a coming of age story about an American girl from Los Angeles named Zoe who goes to England for the summer and discovers her love for horses, specifically one horse named Raven. Zoe makes new friends, goes on adventures and finds love all while trying to stay true to herself. In season 3 there are some really big surprises that fans should be on the lookout for.
Who/ what inspires you? Why?
Halle Berry. She has been an inspiration to me since I was young. She’s one of the reasons I wanted to act. Her style and grace are incredible and she’s a talented actress.
What are you up to when you're not acting?
I’m a homebody so I love spending time with my family in sweats no makeup and food- can’t get any better than that!
What's one fact people might not know about you?
I can’t let you know all my secrets, shhhhh….
You began your career at a young age, what is a lesson you’ve learned from starting so young?
To be patient. The right things will come your way.
What advice would you give to a talented, driven actor who’s just starting their career?
If it’s yours, you will get it- whatever “it” is to you. For me, it’s a role and I look at it as- I do my best, make it hard for them to say no to me and if it’s for me, I will get it.
Can you share the biggest obstacle you've faced in your career, and how you overcame it?
The biggest obstacle I face is sometimes being too in my head. It’s an obstacle I still face but I have to remind myself to take it one step at a time.
Are there any projects you are currently working on that your fans and viewers can look forward to?
There are two Free Rein specials out right now, Free Rein: The Twelve Neighs of Christmas and Free Rein: Valentine’s Day, which we had a lot of fun shooting and our Season 3 is due out this year as well.
